Who Gets The Pell Grant Government Educational Aid

One of the most sought-after scholarship grants nowadays is the Pell Grant. Being a grant it doesn’t need to be paid back unlike a student loan. Unlike other grants, the Pell Grant does not have a lot of strings attached. However, only the chosen few are eligible under the Pell Grant requirements.

The Pell grant evolved from the Basic Educational Opportunity Grant. After undergoing various revisions, the name was changed to Pell Grant in honor of Senator Claiborne Pell, a democrat who proposed a bill amending the policies of the grant. The United States Department of Education is the implementing arm of the federal government for the scholarship grant. The grant basically aims to give financial assistance for education to low earning families.

Because of the limited budget of the grant the selection criteria for the award of the grant are very strict. Although a lot of students need the grant, not everyone can avail of it. And to actually get the grant one has to satisfy all Pell grant requirements. The Department of Education has very strict screening policies to makes sure that only the most deserving benefit from the grant.

For a student to avail of the scholarship, he or she should be an undergraduate who will be getting into college. This scholarship is only for undergraduates, it is not awarded to students pursuing graduate programs.Although the scholarship is offered by the federal government of the United States, non-citizens may also avail of such grant under certain circumstances.

Among the Pell Grant requirements, the most important thing to note is the fact that the grant is only offered to students from low-income families. The Department of Education determines the need for financial aid by calculating each applicants EFC or Expected Family Contribution. The department has a particular formula to determine the EFC of each applicant. Students who are interested in availing of the Grant have to apply by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. The form has to be submitted prior to the student’s first year as an undergraduate and annual updates are necessary.
