What Is ATM Fraud?

There is an increase of debit card fraud being carried out  at ATM’s or cash point machines as they are more commonly known.  It is not only card fraud at machines but can also happen when shopping for a pair of women’s shoes. How do you realise if the cash point machine has been tampered with and by using it without due care and attention, you could become the next target to  card fraud. Do you purposely protect and cover your pin when using ATM machines, but how do you cover your pin and who do you cover it from? Well guess what, it can so easily happen to you.

Do you think you cover your pin right? I normally think about who is standing behind me at the cash point machine. Who is watching me so that when I walk away from the cashpoint, are they going to come after me? It has not occurred to me that I may be being watched without knowing it. Everything seemed ok, I was the only one at the cash point.

There didn’t look to be anything out of the ordinary with this cash point machine  when I was buying my new pair of Vans women’s shoes, to all the others I had used. I entered my pin and made my request, but then my card was not given back, the machine had got stuck.

I’d never been in this situation and didn’t know what to do or how to get help.  I couldn’t abandon the machine as I had not got my card returned. The machine didn’t have a phone number to call for help. I have not thought about carrying any bank emergency phone numbers separately.  I’d never thought I would be in this position.

I can see part of the card but I can’t touch it and pull it out. These scams are so highly planned and well covered that it is so easily to become the next victim. Somewhere there will be a camera craftily concealed in the top portion looking down on the keypad where you insert your number.

The only way to stop your pin number being recorded if a machine has been tampered with is by ensuring that it is covered.   If you have a colleague with you or nearby, try and get their attention and ask for them to get assistance, find phone numbers but make sure you do not leave the cashpoint machine and it is left unattended. But no, they are not, they will be retrieving your bank card and going off with it. Once the card is in their possession, and now they know your pin number, you will find that your card is used at another cash machine and the most amount of cash which can be withdrawn in one go will be removed.

Ensure you remain at the machine and it is not left unattended. Check the area where you insert your card and see if anything comes off or can be removed.

This scam works by using an extra cover where you place your card in and it will have additional piece of card on to stop your card from being returned to you.   You may wish to force your card back into the machine so it cannot be pulled out by anybody else and make you time to stop your card.

You may also see a small hole for a camera or an additional strip of light.

You could report your opinion that the ATM has been played with to the police who could offer you advice and assistance.

To ensure you are not likely to become a victim and not be inconvenienced , ensure you are conscious to using the cashpoint machines.
