The Process Of Panning Gold

The gold panning process is based on the suspension of various materials taken from a body of water and letting heavier materials sink in the water, taking advantage of their higher specific gravity. The materials need to be suspended for a certain amount of time in order to let the gold sink to the pan’s bottom. After this process is completed, the lighter materials at the top of the pan are consequently washed away, leaving the gold and the heavy black sands at the bottom. A good place to start is in dried watercourses of creeks or dried creek beds. Select the section that is deepest, for this is where the most gold have settled. These will most probably lie at bed rock at the bottom. The top layer of gravel should be removed, and the pan filled up about 60% full of the bottom material, and then filled with water almost to the brim.

 

The next step is to remove unwanted debris such as rocks, leaves, twigs, and other foreign material. Make swirling and circular movements so as to wash out the lightest and uppermost material back into the water. At the same time, the side of the pan that is furthest may also be slightly dipped back just below the water surface, to allow further washing of the unwanted material at the top of the pan. Gentle swaying and shaking motions will further speed up the process of eliminating the unneeded material. Soon, only the heaviest particles will be left in the pan, and when there is only a spoonful of this material left, one can proceed to the next step.

 

Discard the water carefully until only a small amount is left, just enough to immerse the bottom part of the pan. Check for small nuggets, and manually remove as much of the larger ones as possible, transferring them to a separate container. Then proceed again to swirl the pan, at a speed that will move all the material to the pan’s bottom. Perform this process for several batches, and take home all the remaining contents for final processing. Once home, take away as much of the liquid as possible from the concentrated materials, then dry them under the sun. Once dried, remove the black sands with a magnet. As for the lighter sand materials, they can be carefully blown away while tilting the pan and gently tapping it. Tapping the pan will move the gold down to the bottom of the pan. This final process is a delicate and slow procedure.
