1. Choose Your {Candle Making Fragrance}

Fragrance oil is available in virtually any craft shop. You can also look for it on the internet. I suggest that you opt for fragrance oils rather the cheaper alcohol and water based fragrances. Your wax mix will be oil based, so your fragrance should also be oil based. Why? As oil & water do not mix, a water based perfume tends not to mix with oil based wax.

2. Pick Your Wax

The basics of {scented candle making} are more or less the same as for ordinary wax candles. Start by choosing your desired kind of wax. These days the market offers a versatile range of wax, starting from natural waxes made from beeswax, palm or soy and on to gel or paraffin wax. It is important that you decide on the fragrance intensity for your candles before picking the kind of wax. For example, lower density wax holds less fragrance than wax of a higher density.

3. The Art of Making Aromatic Candles

Now that we’ve covered wax selection, let’s talk about the process of creating scented candles.

1st step is to melt your wax. Use a double boiler for this purpose. That means put the wax in a small pot. Now place that container into a slightly larger pot partially filled with water. You may now heat the water. Use a thermometer to avoid burning your wax. The temperature should be kept at 170-180 degrees Fahrenheit.

When the wax is melted, put a wick in the mold & take the wax from the heat source. Next add the fragrance oil that you’ve selected. A mixture of 1 ounce of fragrance oil to 1 pound of wax will create a fragrance level equal to 6% of candle density. Be aware that greater amounts of fragrance will cause the candle to burn out sooner because it has a higher liquid density.

Next pour the melted wax/fragrance mixture into it’s mold. The only job left is to let it cool before removing your candle from it’s mold.

Congratulations! You’re finished!

4. Experiment as You Go Along

Start experimenting and you will soon become an expert in all aspects of making candles. By using different fragrances and colors, you will perfect the candle making technique and thoroughly enjoy the process.

It’s a great feeling to award your loved ones with a {scented candle that is homemade} knowing that they will find the fragrant essences both relaxing and invigorating.
