Budgets serve many purposes, and these purposes are contingent on the type of budget, business, or family. But what is the main purpose that all budgets have in common? In a business, department managers make decisions daily, which influence the profit the business makes. If they do not have a plan for these operations, they cannot make effective decisions and coordinate the actions of their departments with the others in the company. This is a major goal of a budget – it should be a financial plan for a household or a company for a certain period. In a household, the budget is a joint one for all aspects while in a business, each area usually has a separate one. A business may have a sales budget, a research and development budget, a cash budget, an advertising budget, a purchasing budget, and so on. New projects, for example, also need separate budgets to ensure smooth operations. These budgets are then combined into one main budget for the activities of the whole company. In a family, the separate household expenses are compared and contrasted, so in a way, it is the same.
The purpose of the budget boils down to coordination, planning, communication, assessment, and control, because a budget is in fact a plan. Different questions can be answered by a good budget and important decisions are also involved. Old plans and processes are discussed and if deemed outdated and ineffective, new ones are developed and implemented in their place.
In a company, the department managers or heads are responsible for finding effective ways to carry out each task. They can take their subordinates’ opinion into consideration, but the final decision is theirs to make. This should not be the case in a family, even if one partner or parent is the breadwinner, and the other just looks after the household and/ or the child/children. If one spouse wants to dictate how the budget looks like, and the other family members don’t have a say, this is a signal that they are not even a family.
Just because someone is not making any money at the moment does not make him or her worthless. If they do not get a say, why are you with them in the first place? If the breadwinner had to plan the budget all by themselves, they would not have time for that and working on top of it. So it is not even technically possible to achieve authoritarianism in this regard.
Adequate communication is important as to create an effective and reasonable budget. It should take into consideration the tasks and responsibilities of all employees. Department managers, for instance, have to explain to their superiors the extent of their activities and how they will be performed.
