According to most studies, only 3 out of 10 students are financially capable of paying for their college education. However, this should not deter one from getting a college degree.  There are many ways to get free college education.  The Pell grant would be at the top of the most popular government sponsored grants.  The federal Pell grant program provides financial aid to those students who can’t afford college education. 

The Pell Grant is only awarded to those students who belong from financially weak families. It is primarily intended for undergraduate students enrolled in participating institutes.Pell grant requirements are very strict and the entire application process is designed to ensure only the deserving benefit from the grant.  

How does a Pell Grant work?

Participating universities may either credit the Pell Grant funds to the student’s school account or pay him in the form of a check.  Students are paid at least once per term – semester, trimester or quarter.

How to avail of a Federal Pell Grant?

The government does not make it difficult for students to apply for the Pell grant.  Pell grant requirements are simple yet very strict.  

The following are the requirements:

* The student should be able to prove financial need;* He or she must have a high school diploma, a GED, or have the ability to benefit from the program or training course.* The student must also be a United States Citizen, permanent resident or other eligible classification of non-citizen.  

Students who are non citizens must also conform to the eligibility requirements for non-citizens, these conditions are listed below.

* U.S. Permanent Citizen (has Alien Registration Card or I-551)

* Conditional Permanent Citizen (has I-551C Card);

* Refugee

* Asylum grantee

* Parolee

* Cuban-Haitian entrant with an Arrival Departure Record (I-94) from the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS).

*Must have a valid social security number*Should make satisfactory academic progress during the course of the degree*Register with selective service, if you are a male between the age of 18 to 25*The student must certify that he/she is not receiving any other form of federal aid.

If you fulfil the above Pell grant requirements then you are eligible to apply for the Pell Grant.
