Be Sure You Are Covered

Everybody eagerly looks forward to their annual vacations. As our time off from work draws ever closer we might even start to tick off the days from our calendars, impatient for the day when we fly off to the sunshine.

Unfortunately many people head for their holiday destinations without giving hardly a thought to the need for insurance. This is particularly true for those who don’t arrange their holidays through a travel agent. Travel agencies will generally remind people of the need for holiday insurance but even when they do many people take out the cheapest policy possible which can often be inadequate for many circumstances.

The key reason that many people don’t take out adequate holiday insurance cover is that they don’t expect they will need it. Nobody expects to enounter the nightmare of needing serious medical attention or being the victim of crime while on holiday. But problems do happen and emergencies abroad can be extremely expensive. For example, if the worst was to happen and you needed to be flown home to the UK it could set you back many thousands of pounds. For example the cost of returning home from the United States in an air ambulance would be between £35K and £45K and from the Canary Islands the cost could be between £12K and £16K.

Unfortunately, while nobody plans for disasters problems can occur and imagine that you had to pay the cost of an expensive air ambulance yourself?

Although I’ve never had cause to claim for medical expenses from my own holiday insurance I have, on two occasions, had to claim for items that were stolen or lost. On one occasion, while travelling in India, I had my camera stolen from my bag on a train. On another occasion, when flying to Italy, the airline managed to lose my suitcase.

These experiences serve to highlight another important reason to ensure that you have holiday insurance. Its bad enough to lose your valuable personal possessions but imagine how much worse this situation can be if you don’t have adequate insurance cover.

When choosing a good holiday insurance policy it is really worthwhile making certain that you are familiar with the limitations of the policy. Lots of people are blissfully unaware of these exclusions, for example most policies will not cover drink or drug related incidents?

It is worth remembering that cheaper policies will tend to offer less cover than the more expensive ones. Before committing to the cheaper option consider whether you are being tempted by the initial saving and be certain that the policy covers you for all those hefty expenses that can occur, particularly when medical assistance is required.

There may be ways to save some money, perhaps by considering an annual, multi-trip policy or by using a group insurance policy. Nobody should ever leave the UK without ensuring that they have enough insurance cover.
